Please be in prayer for the nation of Japan as they recover from the biggest earthquake to hit in about 150 years. The quake triggered a 32-foot tsunami that swept away boats, cars and homes. The quake's epicenter was 231 miles northeast of Tokyo, but the natural disaster is expected to spread to places far beyond Japan.
The Free Methodist Church in Japan is a General Conference with 2,408 members in 26 churches. Bishop Hiromichi Oshima thanks everyone for their concern and prayers. He reports there are seven churches in the area most affected by the earthquake and tsunami. He writes: "We have heard from most of those churches. They have suffered minor damage, such as broken windows. But the main structure is fine. There are no reports of injuries. We have heard from one pastor and his family that since there is no electricity or gas and it is cold in their area, they are sleeping in their car."
"We have yet to hear from one of our churches. The telephone service is down in that area. We thank God for His protection in this time. Most of our churches are in areas not affected by the earthquake. We have had mild tremors only."
"Thank you again for your prayers. We don't yet know the full extent of the damage. Please wait for more information as we find out what has happened with our church family."
